It rains in my heart: Paul Verlaine

It Rains In My Heart:By Paul Verlaine

It rains in my heart
As it rains on the town,
What languor so dark
That soaks to my heart?
Oh sweet sound of the rain on the earth and the roofs!
For the full heart again,oh the song of the rain
It rains for no reason in this heart lacking heart
What? No treason? It's grief without reason.
By far the worst pain, without hatred or love.
Yet no way to explain why my heart feels such pain!

The French poet, Symbolism leader, and Decadent Paul-Marie Verlaine was born in Metz, Northeast France on March 30, 1844. His family moved to Paris in 1851, where he was enrolled in the lycée. In 1862, he received his bachelor’s degree, then following the wishes of his father, an infantry captain, entered civil service.his early poetry was rediscovered, his lifestyle and strange behavior in front of crowds attracted admiration, and in 1894 he was elected France’s “Prince of Poets” by his peers. He died in Paris at the age of 52 on January 8, 1896.

Summary: there is an unknown force that is making the author's heart rain. No one knows what it is                      or why he is feeling like this. It rains for no reason and is the worst pain he has felt.

Speaker: someone who is very lonely and depressed talking in first person.

Imagery:”raining in my heart”
there is a terrible sensation in the authors feelings which causes his heart to rain.

Figurative language: “It rains for no reason In this heart lacking heart”.

Tone: the author sounds like he is a stage of depression but the tone is not really expressed by the                 poem. the poem overall is very mysterious and very dark. The author thus doesn't tell us the                 tone or shows us.
